Client is an Acute Care 90 bed Hospital, located in a beautiful University seaside town in Nova Scotia, Canada. They are seeking full-time and/or part-time hospitalists.
You would be joining a very collegial team of 6 physicians who cover the current hospitalist service on a rotating basis and who are supported by community based, full-service family physicians and local specialists. Each hospitalist line will cover approximately18 patients, composed of medical patients outside the ICU, stroke patients in our regional stroke unit, stable pediatric patients, newborns, and inpatients on the geriatric rehabilitation unit. Day time coverage is 8am to 5pm. On-call services from 5pm to 8am to be split between physicians covering the service. Expectations at this time are on-call coverage 1/3 during your working period, for approximately 50-55 patients per night. Call is home based with expectations for bedside response time as per provincial requirements. There is potential to move towards facility based call, shared with family physicians providing inpatient services, which would decrease on-call frequency.
Compensation is as per the provincial hospitalist agreement of $1319.50 per day, with increases as per the master agreement. On-call compensation is $300/night, with fee for service billing after hours. Given the expansion of the hospitalist program, we are excited to be exploring potential new models of care that could improve patient care, hospital flow, and physician satisfaction. We welcome input and participation from new team members as we develop the service moving forward. If you are interested in a broader scope of practice, that includes but is not limited to hospitalist services, there are many possible opportunities.
The hospital is an acute care facility providing a range of primary and secondary services through in-patient, outpatient, and satellite clinics. With more than 60 physicians practicing in a variety of medical specialties and sub-specialties, serving a population of nearly 40,000.
With approximately 90 beds for all in-patient care, hospitalist physicians are joined by our colleagues in family medicine, internal medicine (general and subspecialty, who cover our 6 bed ICU), emergency medicine, geriatrics, general surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, anesthesia, radiology (U/S, CT, MRI, ECHO), palliative care and visiting oncology and neurology. Community based care is further supported by a men’s and women’s health centre, chronic pain clinic, methadone clinic, walk-in clinic, and youth clinic at the local high school. Physicians and all staff, both historically and today, take great pride in working to provide high quality care to our patients and place strong value in collegiality in the workplace. We have the most active cross-specialty, accredited CME program in the province and host regular medical staff social events.
An abundance of entertainment, recreation, and cultural events make this university town attractive to physicians at all stages of their careers. If you would like a dose of the big city life, we are just a two hour drive from major city and an international airport.
Interested candidates must be licensed or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, with training in either Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
